Prey 2017 steam7/1/2023 ![]() ![]() I finished it after about 6-7 hours and enjoyed it immensly. Some are slightly more innovative ( like the ghost children, whose origin you actually SEE on screen and it's not pretty, gulp), but it's not that much to write home about.Īnyways, what I really appreciated was the fact that the game knows exactly how long it should be. This actually applies to the enemies at large – there aren't that many types of them and they are quite easy to defeat. The later ones are interesting from a design standpoint, but none are actually challenging that much. I enjoyed the first one as it came with a great intro, but once you realise that you are virtually immortal, the appeal kinda wears down. Some guns with more punch are required for the tougher enemies and bosses, but they do not come until much later in the game. I mostly sticked with the basic machine gun thingy (all the weapons are alien, except for a wrench) and it gave satisfying results. There are a couple and they utilise different mechanics, but tbh you don't use all that many during the campaign. Add to this a regular usage of gravity-shifting walkways and jumping on asteroids each with its own center of gravity and you have a game environment like no other. Great trickery, really twists your mind in a knot. My favorite shift comes right at the beginning when you see a small meteor/planetoid kept in a room behind glass and when you enter a nearby portal you are transported ONTO the thing so suddenly the surrounding room becomes huge and seemingly very far away. The alien ship is full of them and they create mind-bending scenarios where one moment you are standing in one place just to be instantly transported to a completely different one with a reversed gravity, so up becomes down and you have to adjust immediately to not die in a firefight. Next thing you will absolutely notice is the level design and the use of portals. It is all combined with a really great sound design (those squishes and blurts), and really manages to immerse you. The aliens don't play around nicely and their ship's design is really unnerving. What strikes you first is the visuals – the landscapes of bio-mechanical monstrous experiments taking place around you are jaw-dropping to this day and may sometimes make you feel uneasy. Plus the story actually has some twists which I will not spoil, go check them out! Along the way you discover that what you regarded as magical mumbo-jumbo told by your old man is actually true and you can embrace your inner spirit to solve puzzles and fight. There you witness how the aliens are in the middle of a grand invasion which takes form of transporting whole populations onboard to be transformed into mutated servants, but thanks to an existing resistance members you are freed and given an opportunity to set things right. Suddenly, aliens come, kidnap you along with the family and immediate surroudings and transport onboard their Sphere orbiting the Earth. Now, the story is quite simple, but told well – you live in a Reservation with your grandpa and girlfriend, you hate this place and disrespect your native heritage and wish to run away. I really appreciate games which don't sprawl like hot mess, but rather take a laser-focus approach to gameplay and Prey does it extremely well. The mechanics are few, but they are original and well-polished. It is probably the only game on IdTech 4 that actually utilizes the full potential of the engine. I remember reading about it when it first came around, the excitment with which it was welcomed as a truly innovative and out-of-the-box shooter with (finally) a good utilisation of the Doom 3 engine. Having a bit more time at the beginning of the year I decided to play through the entirety of the famed 2006 Human Head FPS game – Prey.
